The name "Mala Compra," meaning "bad bargain" in Spanish, reflects the area’s history dating back to plantation times. The remnants of the Mala Compra Plantation, owned by early settler Joseph Hernandez, are nearby, offering a deeper historical layer to your visit. This region is also part of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, meaning sightings of species like gopher tortoises, armadillos, and migratory birds are common.
Best Times to Hike: Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid the midday heat. Winter and spring provide cooler, more comfortable hiking conditions.
What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and plenty of water. A camera or binoculars will come in handy for wildlife enthusiasts.
Driving Directions: From downtown Palm Coast, head east on Palm Coast Parkway and then south on A1A for approximately 10 minutes. Turn into the Mala Compra Greenway parking lot—it's well-marked and easy to locate.
