About This Adventure Destination

Nestled near Phnom Penh in Cambodia, the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center serves as a sombre reminder of the country’s turbulent history. Once an orchard, this site is now a poignant memorial and educational center dedicated to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. The landscape comprises several towering stupas and mass graves, each telling the somber tales of the atrocities that occurred here from 1975 to 1979. Visitors often reflect on history amid the serene garden setting, where informative plaques and guided tours provide context to the chilling past.

Key Features: Choeung Ek is distinguished by its Memorial Stupa, which houses over 5,000 human skulls meticulously arranged behind glass panels. The mass grave pits, now delicately landscaped, serve as open-air exhibits for reflection and education.

Historical Note: Once a detention and execution site, Choeung Ek stands today as a place of reconciliation and learning, emblematic of Cambodia’s resilience and dedication to peace.

Despite its harrowing history, Choeung Ek is a significant cultural landmark, offering an insightful and respectful journey through Cambodia’s past.

Editorial Assessment

Choeung Ek, while historically significant, is not a naturally occurring landmark. It provides profound cultural and historical insights but doesn’t meet the criteria for iconic natural features. Therefore, its rating reflects its importance as a historical and educational site.

So Sad. Why humans do this to humans is beyond me. Why soldiers did this to their fellow citizens is beyond me. Never forget. Estimated 15000 people executed here. Men, women and children. In a cruel twist of fate, those exhuming the bodies years later also suffered the effects of the chemicals ( DDT etc) the executioners put on the bodies. Hence the exhumation was stopped at around 8000 skulls. Evil persists when good people do nothing…
