About This Adventure Destination

Echo Canyon Trailhead sits at the base of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, offering one of the city’s most demanding yet rewarding hikes. This trail draws outdoor enthusiasts seeking dramatic desert scenery combined with a solid physical challenge. The steep ascent covers about 1.2 miles with an elevation gain of roughly 1,400 feet, requiring some scrambling over rocky terrain and navigating built-in railings for extra support. The rugged path winds through classic Sonoran Desert features, including towering saguaro cacti and distinctive red sandstone formations, which form the mountain’s unique backbone.

Hikers reach the summit to take in sweeping views of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the surrounding desert valleys. On clear days, the panoramic vistas showcase the city skyline set against a backdrop of desert wilderness, providing an unforgettable reward after the climb. The name Camelback reflects the mountain’s shape, reputedly resembling a kneeling camel, a well-known landmark with historical significance to local Native American tribes and early settlers.

Echo Canyon is known for its sheer granite boulders and high exposure to sun, so preparation is essential. This trail remains a favorite for those wanting an intense workout and stunning natural beauty in the heart of Arizona’s urban desert environment. While the route is popular—often busy with hikers and climbers alike—it delivers a genuine nature experience close to the city. Its blend of challenging terrain, iconic views, and the desert’s signature flora makes Echo Canyon Trailhead a standout destination in the Southwest.

This was a great, challenging, fun hike! Only 1.2 miles, but most of it is scrabbling up rocks. Coming down is much more challenging than the way up! Great city views all the way up. Very popular with lots of climbers, so if your goal is to have quiet solitude, this may not be for you.
