What an absolutely incredible experience with the Drakensberg Hiker team! From start to finish, the entire adventure was so well organised, and we felt safe, supported and encouraged every step of the way. We hiked up to the magnificent Amphitheatre, and while altitude hiking definitely tested us (and the weather kept things interesting with a proper storm the night before ), the team made the entire experience unforgettable. Their knowledge, professionalism, patience and genuine passion for the mountains really stood out. We were incredibly lucky to wake up to the most beautiful sunny day on the mountain, and standing at the top of the Amphitheatre is an experience I honestly don't think words can do justice to. The views were absolutely breathtaking! A massive thank you to the entire Drakensberg Hiker team, Ian, Sdudla, Justin and the incredible porters for leading us safely, keeping spirits high and making this bucket-list adventure so special. You are an incredible group of people, and we couldn't have asked for a better team to share this experience with. If you're thinking about doing a hike with Drakensberg Hiker — do it! You won't regret it. We will treasure this adventure and the memories we made forever.

We organized a drakensberg northern traverse hike with the drakensberghiker team in August 2026. After the experience we would recommend them to anyone looking to hike in the area. They went above and beyond to help us have a great experience on our trip. Ian's communication was always prompt and professional, and the rest of the team members we met were all personable, welcoming, and kind to us. On the second day of our hike, we awoke to a serious amount of snow - a snow storm had come in overnight, which forced us to abandon our initial plan. (Yes we had seen the forecast, but the mountains are where forecasts meet reality and often the two do not match, so we took our chances!). Fortunately our guide knew the way even though it was covered in 20+ cm of snow in a white out and got us safely off the mountain. Ian and the team then took excellent care of us, not only in terms of safety but also logistics and alternative plans. They went above and beyond what we were expecting, and we managed to have a great time despite the adverse weather. Usually we do our hikes independently, and are quite experienced long distance hikers. But given the more challenging logistics and the changeable weather of the Drakensberg, I can highly recommend going on a trip with Ian's team, knowing that they have your back if things go sideways. We were certainly glad to have done so.

Just got back from another fabulous Drakensberg Hiker trip - 4 day Mweni Circuit. I've been on a number of hikes with Ian and his team - they are well organised and I appreciate the different porter options available. We started with a great braai at the Mnweni Cultural Centre the night before and after a pancake breakfast we headed off into the mountains. Our guide Phila was excellent at maintaining a pace to keep the group together, and had interesting stories to tell about Mnweni and the mountains, which is where all the guides and porters are from. We had three days of fabulous weather, with my high point being watching the circling Cape Vultures from on top of the escarpment by Rockeries Pass as they prepare to start nesting. Dozens of birds flying in different formations hundreds of metres above the valley, magnificent to see. After coming down Ntonjelwana Pass we camped at a stunning spot where we had a full view of the mountains behind us and the valley below, surrounded by flowering Buddleia bushes scenting the air. Warm and sunny. Next morning the cold front hit so those same mountains were covered in snow and we walked back in the rain, but such is hiking - sometimes it rains. But the whole experience was really great and I would strongly recommend going on a Drakensberg Hiker hike. Just try and be as fit as possible because it makes the experience much more enjoyable. The Drakensberg are big mountains and hiking them is always a challenge.

Our Lesotho adventure with Ian(squared) was absolutely amazing and the group atmosphere made the whole experience even more enjoyable (including the one crazy friend we had that they effortlessly adapted too lol) we thoroughly enjoyed every minute...my highlights were definitely the bag pipe performance overlooking the snowy mountains and the smooth ride in the beautiful raptor 🤩🤩
