Waterfall Wonders: Virgin Falls in British Columbia

Very hard gravel road to take. We went half way and I drove back because it was a long way and that road condition? I saved the car by coming back.

Stunning waterfall and swimming hole! Worth the once in a lifetime trip if you can withstand the long, bumpy, thick brush, drive. As mentioned in other reviews, continue past the Google maps end point until the road ends where you will see the steel pedestrian bridge. From there, head into where the waterfall is on foot or, if your vehicle is capable, on wheels. We drove in with our stock 4 Runner with no issues. The deepest water was about 1.5 ft at the beginning of July. Download the Google map for the area. I've e added the map of the area from our BRMB for VI which is a great resource with more detail. The road is rough and it took us 2 hours once on the Alaska Pine Road from Tofino and 2 hours return using the West Road to the Pacific Rim highway which comes out just east of the Tofino Ucluelet junction. There are gates but they were open after 6pm and look like they rarely close. It's the landfill that closes at 4pm. We used 4x4 on a few short hills but with some good tires, I can see someone getting through without. Having said that, you do need a vehicle with clearance. Your paint job will be heavily scratched following the trip so beware. We saw 1 bear and lots of scat. Be prepared in case you have vehicle issues such as a flat.

Bear country, expect to see potentially dangerous wildlife and be prepared. We saw 6 black bears and a few grouse. Took us about 3 hours to get to the waterfall in a 2" lifted 3rd gen 4runner, maybe 2 ish hours back without stops. Depends on the time of year you go of course, but the roadside has enough foliage to guarantee lots of minor body scratches this time of year, so don't go if you value your paint. There were two passes that were more intense and actually required 4x4 in my opinion, or a fwd that you really don't care much about. Higher clearance is pretty much required unless they grade the road. The road basically goes to a dead end once you get within like 10km of the falls, so you can't miss it. Really cool photo opportunity with your vehicle if you're comfortable navigating up a 2' deep creek for about 100', but there's not a lot of good recovery points imo. Most of the road is fine but you'll be dodging potholes and going under 30k for most of it. Happy wheeling!

Its hard to get to if you don't have a 4xr short wheel base like a jeep or atv or dirt bike or mountain bike. But it's so beautiful worth the trek to it. Water flows all year along I was there mid Aug

Amazing to see!! I guess the water level is on the lower end right now but it was still gorgeous! You can hear the roar from the clearing spots you camp in. Our buddy was able to drive in thru the stream to pretty much the base of the falls but the water pretty much reached his hood in his FJ. I'm told this is highly likely the tallest and best waterfall to see by driving in on the island. There are others but you have to hike in, which I'm unable to do.
