About This Adventure Destination

Storm King Trailhead, located near Port Angeles on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, offers a challenging and rewarding outdoor experience. This trailhead is the starting point for the demanding ascent of Mount Storm King, a peak that towers above the strikingly clear waters of Lake Crescent. The trail presents steep inclines with switchbacks and narrow passages, culminating in rope-assisted climbs that require both strength and steady footing. The panoramic views from the summit are one of the region’s most spectacular sights, showcasing the vast Olympic Mountains and the shimmering lake below.

The area stands out for its dramatic landscape marked by dense old-growth forests dominated by towering firs and cedars, combined with the rugged geology of the Olympic range. Lake Crescent itself is a deep, glacially carved lake known for its pristine water and scenic shoreline. Hikers often remark on the intense physical challenge paired with the stunning natural beauty that rewards every effort. A local legend adds an intriguing layer to the hike—the mountain was once believed to be protected by a fierce storm spirit, reflecting indigenous cultural ties to the land.

Facilities near the trailhead include free parking, restrooms, and some benches for resting before or after the climb. The trail’s difficulty level demands good physical fitness and proper preparation, but those who reach the summit enjoy an experience few other places in Washington can match.

Storm King Trailhead offers an invigorating mix of natural grandeur, adventure, and a touch of local lore, making it a standout destination for hikers seeking a memorable outdoor challenge in the Olympic National Park region.

Great hike and views. Trail is a steady ascend to top. We arrived early and less than a hand full of people, but it got busy quickly by 8am on our way back down.

Quite difficult, bring water but worth it for the views. Also the birds at the peak are super friendly and land on you if you hold your hand out.

Not too challenging. It took three hours to hike round ways, take some pictures, and have sandwiches on the top.

What a great hike! The weather was a little disappointing (foggy) but I still had a really magical experience doing this hike. The sound of the rain hitting the leaves, the trees rustling, my shoes hitting the ground… the combined effect was so soothing. Highly recommend doing the falls when you get back.
