I was finally able to visit the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, and the journey to get there was definitely worth every minute. This cave system is truly a natural wonder, especially once you drift into the massive, cathedral-like chambers. Considering we only explored the first 1.5 kilometers, it is almost impossible to fathom just how vast the entire system really is. My only real complaint is that I wish the tour had lasted longer than the 40 or so minutes we had. Entering the mouth of the cave and slipping into the pitch-black void was a bit unnerving at first—there is a definite jolt of fear floating over meters of deep, silent water in total darkness. But that unease vanished once the lights illuminated the stunning rock formations; it turned into a genuinely fantastic experience. I also really appreciated the individual audio devices. They kept us fully aware of where we were and what we were seeing without requiring the guide to speak loudly, preserving the natural silence that the cave’s wildlife relies on. I hope this will be preserved for the next generations to see.

Going to the Underground River, there are wild monkeys and monitor lizards, which are harmless as long as you don’t engage with them. The audio device was a masterpiece. It was very clear and audible, and it really made the whole experience. I love how it’s timed exactly with the pace of the boat. It shows how tourism can be accommodated without disturbing nature, the bats, and all the creatures inside.
