The shoreline near Joe Wheeler Lodge is an excellent spot for bank fishing. The area features convenient access, picnic tables, and scenic views of Wheeler Lake. Anglers often catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish here, especially early in the morning or just before sunset. For best results, use live bait such as worms or minnows, or artificial crankbaits for bass.

First Creek is a hotspot for crappie and bass, attracting anglers year-round. Located near the park’s campground, this area is accessible by boat or kayak. The cove’s calm waters make it ideal for those targeting crappie using jigs or minnows. During spring and fall, bass fishing improves significantly, with spinnerbaits and topwater lures yielding great results.

Below Wheeler Dam, the tailwater section of the Tennessee River holds some of the biggest catfish in the region. Anglers looking for trophy blue and flathead catfish regularly fish here using cut bait, live shad, or chicken liver. Strong currents create a challenge, so fishing from a boat or the dam’s designated areas provides the best experience.

The park hosts annual bass fishing tournaments, drawing professional anglers.
