Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, located near Ruhengeri in Rwanda’s Northern Province, is a striking natural reserve famed for its dramatic volcanic landscape and impressive wildlife. This 160-square-kilometer park features five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga mountain range, their towering peaks rising sharply into the mist. Established in 1925 as one of Africa’s oldest protected areas, it is a crucial refuge for endangered mountain gorillas—the park holds the largest remaining population of this species in the world.

The park’s rugged terrain includes dense bamboo and montane forests, which not only offer shelter to gorillas but also to golden monkeys and a rich bird life including unique Albertine Rift endemics. Visitors witness volcanic craters, thick green slopes, and clear crater lakes like the one atop Mount Bisoke. The volcanic soils sustain vibrant flora, creating a lush environment against the often foggy, cool mountain air.

Volcanoes National Park is also home to Dian Fossey’s grave, honoring the pioneering primatologist whose work helped save the mountain gorillas from extinction. The region has profound cultural significance, including annual gorilla naming ceremonies that attract local communities and international visitors alike.
