About This Adventure Destination

Red House Beach, located near Salamanca in western New York, offers a tranquil lakeside setting within Allegany State Park’s vast natural landscape. This sandy beach edges a clear freshwater lake surrounded by dense hardwood forests and gentle hills, creating a relaxing atmosphere popular for both day visitors and campers. As one of New York’s oldest state parks, with origins dating back to 1921, Allegany combines rich natural beauty with deep historical roots, including Native American heritage that enriches any visit.

The beach itself features soft sand suitable for lounging and swimming, backed by open grassy areas perfect for picnics or resting under the sun. The calm lake waters invite activities such as kayaking and canoeing, while the nearby trails vary from easy lakeside paved paths to more challenging woodland routes like the steep Three Sisters trail, favored by visitors looking for a rewarding physical challenge. Wildlife sightings are common here; birdwatchers and nature lovers can expect to see an array of local birds, deer, and sometimes even elusive animals like bobcats.

The park’s forest is dominated by mature hardwoods, including maples and oaks, with seasonal wildflowers adding bursts of color. The interplay of water, sand, and forest creates a setting suited for quiet reflection as well as active outdoor fun. Red House Beach’s blend of calm waters, scenic hiking opportunities, and historic surroundings makes it a standout destination in the region, well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts and families alike.

Pulled into the state park had to pay to get in and that would have been fine, but after paying then driving to the beach they had it completely closed. Still made the day of it, but it would have been nice to be told at the gate that it was closed so we had the option to turn around since that is the whole reason we went there.
