About This Adventure Destination

Abiqua Falls is a captivating natural waterfall located in Oregon’s lush landscapes, near the city known for its rich greenery and rugged terrain. This waterfall stands out in the region for its impressive 92-foot drop into a rocky basin surrounded by basalt columns and moss-covered cliffs. The falls pour into the Abiqua Creek, creating a dramatic and misty scene that reflects the Pacific Northwest’s wild beauty. One of the unique geological features of this area is the columnar basalt formations that frame the waterfall, formed from ancient lava flows cooling slowly into distinctive hexagonal shapes. The environment here supports ferns, mosses, and thick conifer forests, enhancing the natural drama and serenity of the spot.

While not as widely famous as other Oregon waterfalls, Abiqua Falls holds a special allure for those who seek less crowded, rugged beauty. The falls are often shrouded in mist, and the ethereal atmosphere makes it a standout destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike. Historically, this area is part of lands once traversed by native peoples, and the creek’s name is thought to derive from Indigenous languages, adding a layer of cultural significance.

The combination of towering basalt cliffs, powerful water flow, and dense greenery creates one of the region’s most striking waterfall experiences. Abiqua Falls beckons visitors to witness Oregon's powerful natural forces within a relatively untouched setting, offering a memorable scene of wilderness and geological wonder.

Editorial Assessment

Abiqua Falls earns its ranking as a compelling natural destination due to its striking basalt columns and powerful waterfall set in a lush forest. While it offers a unique geological and scenic experience, its relative remoteness and less-developed access keep it from the highest iconic status. It remains an excellent choice for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking for dramatic yet off-the-beaten-path beauty in Oregon.

We went last week there. It was very beautiful fall and river. To get there is a little tricky, it is necessary to decide how close we should drive to fall. I parked at parking lot google indicating 1.2mile. But there are 2+mile to get trailhead. It is better to prepare enough water to cover the distance. The trail is very steep so claiming shoes helped a lot. And the fall was enough worth for our effort. It’s is so beautiful and calm atmosphere.

Soooo unfortunately we didn't end up making it to the falls. We parked at the top first parking area because you will need an off roading vehicle to get down to the actual parking to start the hike. We tried but it was like 3miles downhill and after remembering we will need to return up hill after... it was too much. (we have kids with us) so be sure to have an off road vehicle to get to the actual trail head. We will try again next year. We had a 12 seater van that wouldnt be able to make it down the path, its really slick with gravel and tight spots. I know it's gorgeous but I was sadly disappointed we couldn't make it down.

The road down has some severe holes so beware, I recommend parking along the side and walking the last 3/4 mile or so to the trailhead, which is almost at the end of the road. The hike down is short but steep, but there are ropes to assist. Absolutely gorgeous area and the waterfall is truly gorgeous.
