I live in Carlsbad 60 minutes drive away and have found this particular place my favorite day hiking location. At 70 years old I would consider this an easy to moderate trek for someone my age.

The Smith Spring Trail is a magnificent hike accessible to the whole family. This 3.9 km loop allows you to discover varied and impressive landscapes in the heart of the Guadalupe Mountains. The trail is well-maintained and offers superb viewpoints throughout. Between the rock formations, the unique desert vegetation, and the panoramas of the surrounding mountains, each section of the trail offers its own unique discoveries. A relatively short hike, but one that offers extraordinary and absolutely breathtaking scenery. An excellent way to discover the beauty of the park without undertaking a long climb.

We hiked this trail in December and the weather was really pleasant. We started at the Frijole ranch museum and per recommendations from evereyone here, did the loop counter clockwise, covering Manzanita springs first. They were right, its really pretty that way. The trail slowly picks up some elevation (not so strenous), through bushes and some creeks and gets us to Smith springs. From there its completely downhill and we got to the bottom within a few mins. Very beutiful area.
