About This Adventure Destination

Living Room Trail offers a refreshing outdoor getaway just minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Set along the eastern foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, this trail stands out for its combination of accessible terrain and rewarding panoramic views. It’s a favored spot for those looking to enjoy city vistas framed by natural rock formations without venturing far from urban life. The trail’s name comes from a unique stone arrangement near the summit resembling a cozy “living room” with rock benches and seats, where hikers can relax while soaking in sweeping views.

The hike features diverse natural elements including sun-exposed slopes dotted with scrub oak and occasional bursts of wildflowers during spring and summer. As the trail climbs steadily, multiple overlooks offer outstanding photo opportunities of the Salt Lake Valley and distant snow-capped peaks. The geology includes rugged, loose rocks typical of the Wasatch range, which adds some challenge to the route but also showcases the natural rugged beauty of the area.

Living Room Trail connects to larger trail systems like Red Butte Canyon and Mount Wire, making it a gateway for longer adventures. Historically, the Wasatch foothills have been a natural playground for locals and students of the nearby university, valued for their scenic escapes and accessible wilderness. The trail’s moderate difficulty level suits a wide range of visitors from casual walkers to experienced hikers, making it a perfect spot for city dwellers to get a quick nature fix with rewarding views.

With well-maintained stone seating at the summit and easy access, Living Room Trail is an inviting outdoor gem just outside Utah’s bustling cityscape.

Pick your route wisely. If you go to the right and go slowly up it'll be a lot easier compared to going to a small mountain. I, made the mistake of climbing up the small one on the left right at the front and it was a lot harder but quicker. Great view but takes a lot out of you to get to the top

Great place to go for a hike. Bonneville and red butte trail can be crowded.

Amazing place to be. Just 10 min drive from downtown. Its about 1.5 hrs hike. The salt lake city looks amazing from the top. There are multiple trails to get to the top. Plenty street parking (3hrs limit).

Really beautiful place. Don't want to ding it but the signage isn't great. Put in living room trail on Google maps and it should take you to the start. There are a lot of other trails here which took us to a beautiful view. But the way down was treacherous, loose rocks and nothing to hold onto. I fell a bunch of times. Definitely wear the right footwear if you come.

Beautiful mostly sun exposed trail up the Wasatch mountains behind the University of Utah with a great view of the city. I’d recommend hiking one of the less populated and steeper paths directly up the mountain instead of the popular one that winds back and forth if you’re up for the challenge. Nice view at the top from the stone benches. No mud or snow for us yesterday although we did the direct route so there might be a little bit of moisture remaining if you follow the main path.
