Mystical Wonders of Actun Tunichil Muknal

An absolute highlight of our Belize tour. A bit of canyoning, river crossing, caving, and history. After a short hike through the jungle, you have to cross a river using a rope. Then you reach the spectacular cave entrance where the river emerges. If you're feeling adventurous, you can take a shortcut: briefly dive under to bypass a cave wall (really cool!). Afterward, you continue through the cave, following the river, until you have to climb a rock face. At the Mayan sanctuary, you have to take off your shoes to avoid damaging skeletons and offering pots. Highly recommended!

An unforgettable adventure. The trip to Actun Tunichil Muknal combines everything you'd want from a jungle excursion: a scenic hike through the rainforest, several river crossings, and a bit of technical cave climbing that's very manageable even without prior caving experience. The real highlight, though, is the cave itself, a completely untouched archaeological site where you walk mere inches from ceramic artifacts and skeletal remains left exactly as the ancient Maya left them centuries ago. Truly humbling. We were fortunate to have Dr. Rafael A. Guerra as our guide. He's a recognized authority on Maya archaeology and culture, and specifically on ATM Cave, his knowledge is genuinely endless. He brought the history, rituals, and significance of the site to life in a way that made the whole experience so much richer. Can't recommend this highly enough.

This was one of the coolest excursions I have ever done! We did this as an excursion with the Jade Jungle Resort as part of our stay and were one of the first ones inside. You start with a 30-45 minute hike to the cave entrance which was nice. The cave entrance is a short swim, then there is a mix of walking, swimming, climbing through the cave until you reach the sacred area. Once you reach the sacred area you will take your shoes off and walk through areas with bones and pottery until reaching the deepest part where a full skeleton lays. There are some tight areas and slippery rocks to climb on. I am not sure I would take younger kids or elderly unless there are pretty mobile. We were there during the slow period (July) and didn’t have any difficulty but was told that the high period (winter) that they can sell out of tickets (maybe 240/day) so male sure you book it well in advance just in case. Absolute must see!
