About This Adventure Destination

Discover the Enchantment of Third Tower - Montale

Perched on the scenic land of San Marino, the Third Tower, also known as Montale, offers visitors a captivating look back in time and a stunning natural experience. This tower, distinct from its counterparts, is less about access and more about witnessing its undeniable presence atop Monte Titano. It stands in the heart of nature, surrounded by lush greenery and offering sweeping views of the countryside below.

Montale is the smallest of the three iconic towers in San Marino, but its charm is unparalleled. Its isolated location provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and breathtaking vistas without the usual tourist crowd. Built in the 14th century, the tower was once a prison, adding an intriguing historical layer to your visit. The tower may not be accessible, but its historical importance and the surrounding natural beauty make it a must-see destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and a touch of history.

This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, featuring unique flora and fauna that are particular to this region of Italy. The remarkable limestone formations of Monte Titano further enhance this stunning landscape, making it a geo-historical treasure for enthusiasts.

Adding to its allure, the calm environment and unspoiled nature offer a perfect escape, presenting a blend of history and the serenity of nature in one incredible location.

Editorial Assessment

While the Third Tower offers stunning views and historical intrigue, its lack of accessibility and natural prominence limits its ranking among the most iconic natural landmarks globally.

The Montale Tower is the only one of San Marino's three towers that cannot be climbed. It's still well worth a visit, though. It stands almost at the end of a cliff, offering a valley with fantastic views. The path to the tower is also a pleasant walk through the woods (downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back to civilization). If you want to go right up to the tower, be careful, as the surrounding rock is natural and can be quite slippery.
