John Hands is a wonderful place for dispersed camping. It used to be a maintained campground that has since closed down. Where the old campground used to be, is only an option for tent camping. However, there is a small parking area where someone could camp in their vehicle, too. There is a beautiful waterfall behind the parking area that flows following a rain during the monsoon season and the winter. The small pool below the waterfall is a popular swimming area for locals.

Follow the road from Portal to the John Hands campground. Park your car there, take the trail to the left and go toward the sound of the beautiful creek. Follow the creek trail to your left/downstream and you will hear a loud "SHHHH" That's the baddest little waterfall. But my camera's battery died so here are pictures of the creek on the way to the waterfall. **There are restrooms (port o potties, but no flies!) at the campground right before you get to this one when you are coming in through Portal. No restrooms at the John Hands campground.

Great vool spot for a little picnic and even get wet and cool off a little. Even in june the creek is flowing enough for the falls to be nice. Small fish in the pools are fun to watch too.
