Info for the trek through the Somoto Canyon. If you dare, a guide is definitely not mandatory for now. Of course, guides are offered, but you can do it on your own. However, you have to take into account that the path along the river along the overgrown path and rocks is sometimes not ideal and you often have to just swim. We took the longest route from La Playa along the bed of the Rio Tapacali to the confluence with the Rio Comali and then along the Rio Coco, so the elevation is gentle, pretty much following the river, there is nowhere to get lost. When you reach a smaller waterfall, you simply have to jump into it from about a meter or two, at least we couldn't get around this one. Then just swim in calm water. The section is long and calm, after about 250-300 m you can climb onto the rocks and continue along the shore. Sometimes it is more comfortable in that water. Then you will come across guys with boats who transport tourists on that section and in a moment you are at the end of the trek. We only had a 10 l water bag with us, 1.5 l of water, of which we still had some left. As I say, those who feel comfortable, can swim and are used to walking, do not have to be as they say, in advance. The entrance to the park is paid and is now 3 USD, we even got tickets. You pay a little from the entrance from the main road in a booth on the right side of the descending road and it is valid for the next day that we were here. They checked us out when we went up to the canyon on the first day. A guide is not only not necessary there, but also not necessary because of the occasional walk through private land. At the end of the penultimate, third viewpoint, it seemed impassable because of the dogs and the gate in front of the finca, but the locals did not cause any problems and were pleasant.

Beautiful, unspoiled nature. We had a great, very knowledgeable local guide called Emir, who also runs a lovely and clean guest house in town. He took us through the canyon and told us about the volcanic rocks, showed us birds. Emir had us swim and jump across certain parts, which made the walk really nice and exciting. We were picked up by a rowing boat for the last part, which felt like being in a film. Great day out!
