About This Adventure Destination

Virgin Falls Trail offers visitors a rare glimpse into the rugged beauty of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau region, just outside small town communities in White County. This hiking destination is well known for its extraordinary waterfalls, particularly Virgin Falls, where water dramatically surfaces from a cave, plunges over a cliff, and then disappears underground—an unusual natural feature not often seen in the area. The trail’s mix of dense forests, rocky terrain, and the sound of rushing water make it stand out as a memorable outdoor experience in this part of the South.

The trail covers about eight miles round-trip and leads travelers past four major waterfalls: Big Branch, Big Laurel, Sheep Cave, and of course the impressive Virgin Falls. Each water feature owes its existence to the underground streams that carve through limestone rock, contributing to intricate cave systems and fascinating geological formations. Along the route, hikers encounter moss-covered boulders and native plants common to the Cumberland Plateau’s ecosystem. Wildlife sightings include birds and small mammals typical to this forested area.

Virgin Falls Trail has roots tied to Appalachian culture and local history, with stories handed down from earlier generations about the early settlers and natural landscape. Visitors value the trail for its hands-on connection to Tennessee’s natural heritage as well as its moderate to challenging hike that rewards with stunning waterfalls and quiet woodland spaces. It requires good footwear and preparation but offers a refreshing day outdoors for both casual hikers and dedicated nature lovers alike.

I started the trail but ended up turning back. I had my Corgi with me and I didn't think he could make the trip. Will be back!

Great hike! It is deemed strenuous and I would say it is hard but so worth it. Will come back for sure! Will do backcountry camping for sure! We enjoyed Big Branch falls, Great Laurel falls and Virgin falls, plus all the caves and pools of water! Make sure to watch your step in some areas where a lot of roots and rocks are protruding the trail! The beginning of the trail is very easy and flat and is for everyone!
