Pig Island, officially called Big Major Cay, is a small, uninhabited island in the Exuma district of the Bahamas. The island is world-famous for its population of wild pigs that roam freely and swim in the Caribbean Sea. The animals have fully adapted to the beach environment and often swim up to tourist boats for food. There is no official record of how they arrived there. One theory suggests that a group of pirates landed on the island and left the pigs there, intending to return later. Another theory posits that they survived a shipwreck and swam to the island.

Loved stopping here. Pugs swimming to the boat. Watching all the pigs and piglets come out was the best. They are friendly and a must see. Someone said the beach was dirty and full of poop. Not true it was extremely clean considering animals are on it.

Pig Beach is one of the most iconic attractions in the Exumas, offering visitors the unforgettable chance to interact with the famous swimming pigs. As the boat approaches Big Major Cay, the sight of pigs wandering along the sand or wading into the turquoise shallows creates a surreal and playful atmosphere. Guides help manage feeding and photos, ensuring safety while keeping the experience smooth even for first‑time visitors. The pigs are friendly and accustomed to tourists, and the shallow water makes it easy to interact without feeling rushed. The beach itself is stunning, with soft sand and clear water that balances the excitement of meeting the pigs with the natural beauty of the Bahamas. The stop at Pig Beach is lively but well‑paced, usually part of a larger island‑hopping itinerary that includes turtles, sandbars, and lunch at Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Families find the experience fun and approachable, while groups enjoy the novelty of sharing such a unique encounter together. Couples may not find it overtly romantic, but the playful energy adds charm to the day. The attraction is unusual and exciting, offering something you truly cannot find anywhere else. The pigs’ personalities — some curious, some laid‑back — make each visit slightly different, adding to the sense of adventure. Overall, Pig Beach earns a top rating for its charm, accessibility, and sheer novelty. It’s not just a stop; it’s a highlight that defines the Exuma experience. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or on a tour, the encounter with swimming pigs is memorable, photogenic, and worth the journey. The balance of natural scenery and playful wildlife makes Pig Beach a must‑do, and one that leaves visitors with stories and photos they’ll share long after the trip ends.
