Majestic Landscapes of Fanthams Peak

Definitely a big challenge, which is rewarded with a perfect view of Mount Taranaki at the end! It took us 5 hours up and down with good weather conditions. You just take stairs the first hour through the beautiful tropical forest, then the area opens up and you walk up the stairs for another 30 minutes with a great view. Once you get to the attention sign, the real challenge begins. The visibility worsens due to the clouds, the ground becomes rocky and sandy and the risk of accidents increases significantly. Now you shimmy up the mountain from marker to marker for the last hour until you reach the top of the hut. The view of Mount Taranaki is so breathtaking that the effort is so worth it!! There is the possibility to stay overnight for free in the hut, which offers 10 beds. Sturdy footwear is necessarily needed and hiking poles are recommended. For comparison, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was NOT as challenging as Fanthams Peak. One way the route is 6.5km long and more than 1000 m altitude.

Very nice hike which takes roughly 5-6 hours return if you take your time. Hiking boots recommend if not mandatory and even hiking poles are very helpful for the last steep part which is very slippery due to gravel. On very clear days you can see the east coast of NZ as well as the south island and the Tongariro Nationalpark. Always visit the I-site at the carpark of Dawson Falls which is also the startpoint to ask for the weather forecast for the day and if there is ice or not. Enjoy!!
