This island stands out in the region for its wide beaches dotted with sand dunes, where sea oats and marsh grasses create a soft fringe to the shoreline. Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, often describing it as an ideal retreat from busier beach spots nearby. Bird Island’s uniqueness comes from its role as a protected habitat, offering safe breeding grounds for loggerhead sea turtles and sanctuary for many seabird species, including pelicans, terns, and herons.

One key feature of the island is its easy accessibility from 40th Street via a walkway or beach path, which encourages quiet, intimate visits. The island boasts salt marshes and tidal creeks, adding diversity to the coastal landscape and supporting an intricate ecosystem. The preserved ecosystem has drawn the attention of conservationists and casual visitors alike, highlighting the ongoing efforts to keep this area pristine.

Historically, Bird Island has been part of coastal conservation stories in the Carolinas, illustrating the delicate balance between human use and habitat protection. i was on a journey through the treacherous beach from the mystical sunset beach during witching hour. we got hooked into the allure of bird island. while walking on the trail the spirits lured us in, zapped our battery life, and tore our feet up. To escape the spirits it took a sacrifice and 2.7 hours of my life.

Bird Island is so beautiful! There is the inlet side, where the boats anchor and there is a trail leading to the ocean side. I prefer swimming on the ocean side if there's no rip currents. Be mindful of rip currents and do not swim alone. Bird Island is a reserve and thus you are responsible for your own actions (i.e., no lifeguards). When the tide is high, the water on the inlet side becomes a little bluer, a little clearer. Sometimes visibility is great, sometimes it varies. Do not disturb any wildlife, take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints! Have fun and be safe!
