Sassafras Mountain is the highest point in South Carolina, reaching 3,553 feet above sea level, and it's one of the easiest mountain summits in the state to visit. The drive to the summit is part of the experience. The winding mountain roads are well-maintained with a gradual climb through beautiful hardwood forests, making it an enjoyable ride whether you're traveling by car or motorcycle. During the fall, the drive becomes especially spectacular as the mountains come alive with autumn colors. The summit area features a spacious parking lot with convenient access to hiking trails, clean restroom facilities, and the scenic overlook. From the parking area, it's just a short, paved walk to the observation platform, making it accessible for visitors of nearly all ages and abilities. The overlook itself offers breathtaking panoramic views across the Blue Ridge Mountains, stretching into both South Carolina and North Carolina. Interpretive signs identify many of the surrounding mountain peaks, and the observation tower provides an even better vantage point for taking in the scenery. Whether you're looking for a peaceful place to enjoy the view, take photographs, have a picnic, or begin a hike into the surrounding mountains, Sassafras Mountain is well worth the trip. I've visited several overlooks throughout the Blue Ridge, and Sassafras Mountain remains one of my favorites because it's so accessible while still offering incredible long-range views. If you enjoy mountain photography, plan your visit near sunrise or sunset when the changing light brings the ridges to life. Travel Tip: If you're exploring this area, consider making it part of a scenic mountain loop that also includes Whitewater Falls, the Bad Creek Visitor Overlook, and the scenic overlook along the Oscar Wigington Memorial Highway (S-37-413). All are within a short drive and together showcase some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Carolinas.
