Lake Kussharo is Japan's largest caldera lake, located in Teshikaga Town in eastern Hokkaido, within the Akan Mashu National Park. In the center of the lake lies Nakajima, Japan's largest island in a lake, and the surrounding area boasts hot springs and abundant nature. ① Location and Access Lake Kussharo is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from Kushiro City and about 1 hour from Memanbetsu Airport. Public transportation includes buses from JR Senmo Main Line's "Mashu Station" and "Bihoro Station," but the number of services is limited, so prior confirmation is necessary. Many tourist spots around the lake have well-maintained parking, making travel by car convenient. ② Facilities and Services Many hot spring inns and campgrounds are scattered along the lakeshore, offering ample accommodation options. Free open-air baths such as Sunayu and Kotan Onsen are particularly popular. Activities such as canoeing and fishing are also popular, allowing visitors to fully enjoy nature. There are tourist information centers and shops throughout the area where you can purchase local specialties and souvenirs. ③ Highlights and Attractions The charm of Lake Kussharo lies in its magnificent natural scenery and diverse activities. The views from Bihoro Pass and Tsubetsu Pass are spectacular, and the scenery is particularly magical during the morning and evening hours. In winter, swans migrate to the lake, and you can see them floating on the surface. At the lakeside sand bath, you can easily enjoy a footbath by digging into the sand and discovering hot springs. There are also many other tourist spots in the surrounding area, such as Mount Iwo and Lake Mashu, and the area shows different faces depending on the season, so you can discover something new every time you visit.
