Tropical Escapade on Ko Muk

After spending three nights on Koh Muk (Koh Mook), we completely understand why so many travellers fall in love with this small island. Located within the Trang Archipelago in Thailand's Andaman Sea, Koh Mook sits among a collection of beautiful islands including Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Libong. While many visitors arrive only as a day trip, particularly to visit the famous Emerald Cave, we believe the island deserves much longer. Unlike some of Thailand's more commercialised islands, Koh Mook has retained its identity as a traditional fishing community. Tourism has grown over the years, but it still feels authentic and relaxed. The predominantly Muslim community is incredibly welcoming, and the slower pace of life is one of the island's greatest strengths. Rather than beach clubs and nightlife, you'll find quiet village roads, long-tail boats, local cafés and genuine Thai hospitality. We stayed at Koh Mook Sunrise Beach, and found the cottage-style accommodation to be practical, comfortable and perfectly suited to the island's laid-back atmosphere. It was a wonderful base from which to explore everything the island has to offer. One of the things we appreciated most was the genuine friendliness of the locals. Everywhere we went we were greeted with warm smiles, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. There is also a good selection of restaurants, cafés and small bars offering plenty of food and drink options to suit most tastes. We visited during the low season, and it's worth noting that several businesses were temporarily closed or undergoing maintenance in preparation for the busier months ahead. This didn't detract from our experience at all, but it's something future travellers should keep in mind if they're expecting every business to be operating. For us, Koh Mook represents what many travellers hope to find but often struggle to discover in Thailand today. It's peaceful without being isolated, welcoming without feeling commercial, and beautiful without trying too hard. Whether you're visiting for the world-famous Emerald Cave, relaxing on the beaches or simply slowing down for a few days, Koh Mook offers an authentic island experience that stays with you long after you've left. There are so many dogs, they chase and bite each other, barking and howling all day and night. Accommodation is cheap during the low season, but once you get there, no restaurants are open, there's nothing to do. Go to another island instead.

PLEASE RECONSIDER GOING HERE As we wanted to explore an island we didn‘t know yet we came across Ko Muk. The island itself is stunning. Beautiful nature, postcard-like beaches. BUT: I need to say that we unfortunately couldn‘t leave fast enough and should’ve taken the existing reviews more serious. There‘s trash literally in every corner. The local village is drowning in plastic, as well as the beaches and jungles. And it seems there is not much being done, as the problem seems almost too big to handle anymore. So they burn the trash next to where we were eating. There‘s always a plastic smell coming from somewhere. It‘s so heartbreaking to see under what conditions the locals and their kids are living in. Every day on the island felt like I‘m only doing more harm with me being there, so we left after 3 days instead of 3 weeks. :(
