About This Adventure Destination

Located near Trumansburg in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York, Taughannock Falls State Park is a standout natural destination famed for its spectacular waterfall and dramatic gorge. The park’s main attraction, Taughannock Falls, plunges 215 feet, making it one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains, towering even higher than Niagara Falls. The striking vertical drop pours into a scenic gorge carved from ancient shale and sandstone rock formations, showcasing layered cliffs that reveal millions of years of geological history.

Surrounding the waterfall, lush forests with diverse plant life create a rich habitat for local wildlife, while a variety of trails offer perspectives from the gorge rim to the base of the falls. This diversity makes the park appealing throughout the seasons, with vibrant greens in spring and summer and stunning foliage in fall. Taughannock Falls was established as a state park in 1925 and remains a cherished site for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

What makes Taughannock Falls State Park exceptional is not just the height of the falls but the accessibility and variety of views it offers — from overlooks accessible by all abilities to a moderately easy, flat trail leading to the base where visitors can feel the mist and hear the roar up close. Nearby Cayuga Lake adds to the allure, providing serene views and additional recreational activities. This combination of geological grandeur, ease of access, and natural beauty makes Taughannock Falls a true gem of the Finger Lakes region.

Great little walk to the falls via the gorge trail, in and out style trail Looking for the best view? Drive up to the lookout parking lot, and the viewing area from the top is breathtaking Not worth the round hike imo
