About This Adventure Destination

Sweetwater Preserve, located in the northwest region of Tucson, Arizona, offers mountain bikers approximately 13 miles of singletrack trails meticulously crafted by the local biking community. This pristine desert enclave, surrounded by urban development, is a hidden gem boasting one of the densest concentrations of saguaro cacti in the Tucson area.

Trail Overview:

  • Starting Point: As you exit the parking lot, the singletrack begins to the right.
  • Saguaro Forest: By staying right, riders enter a thick forest of saguaros, where a rare crested saguaro can be spotted among them.
  • Black Rock and Sun Circle Loops: At the top of a small pass, continue to the right to access these loops. The Black Rock Loop, being the longer of the two, offers a high-speed ride through ocotillo plants.
  • Lost Arrow Trail: After completing the loops, turn right to ascend the semi-technical Lost Arrow Trail.
  • Red Canyon Trail: At the next junction, a left turn leads to the more challenging Red Canyon Trail.
  • Wildflower Ridge Trail: Conclude the ride by descending this trail, which provides panoramic views of the entire preserve.

Key Facts:

  • Location: Northwest Tucson, Arizona.
  • Trail Network: Approximately 13 miles of singletrack.
  • Terrain: Varied, including smooth paths, rocky sections, and semi-technical climbs.
  • Difficulty: Suitable for beginners to intermediate riders, with options for more advanced challenges.
  • Trailheads: Accessible from the main parking area; trails are well-marked.

Recommendations:

  • Preparation: Carry sufficient water, especially during warmer months, as desert conditions can lead to rapid dehydration.
  • Equipment: A mountain bike with good suspension is recommended to handle the varied terrain.
  • Navigation: While trails are well-marked, using a GPS device or trail map can enhance your experience.

Interesting Features:

  • Dense Saguaro Forests: The preserve boasts one of the densest collections of saguaros in the region, including a rare crested saguaro.
  • Diverse Trails: Trails like Black Rock and Red Canyon provide everything from fast-flowing sections to more technical climbs and descents.
  • Scenic Views: The Wildflower Ridge Trail offers sweeping views of the preserve, making it a perfect way to close your ride.

Conservation Note:

Respect the fragile desert environment by staying on designated trails and avoiding contact with cacti and other vegetation. Pack out all trash and give right-of-way to hikers and equestrians sharing the trails.

Sweetwater Preserve combines the beauty of the Sonoran Desert with expertly designed trails, offering a rewarding experience for mountain bikers of all skill levels. Whether you're tackling the high-speed loops or climbing the technical trails, this preserve is a must-ride destination in Tucson.

Editorial Assessment

Sweetwater Preserve offers great opportunities for mountain biking with scenic views of the desert landscape and iconic Saguaro cacti. While it's a beautiful and enjoyable spot for outdoor adventure, it lacks the distinctiveness required to rank among the world's most unique natural landmarks.

Great little outdoor area with beautiful views and sunsets. If you're biking, the best time is evening when there's less foot traffic. Counterclockwise is by far the more enjoyable direction for speed.

Enormous saguaros. My photos are posted. Lots of unusual wildflowers. One of the most beautiful stretches of Saguaro National Park West. The trail is easy but requires attention and good shoes, lots of up and down. Parking is well-maintained. Just a beautiful spot.

This is a bike trail so be aware and step aside or walk the opposite direction so you see them coming. VERY beautiful and minimally shaded.
