About This Adventure Destination

New York Mountain rises prominently within Colorado’s scenic high country near Vail, offering outdoor enthusiasts a remarkable blend of rugged terrain and sweeping alpine vistas. This peak stands out in the Holy Cross Wilderness for its towering granite and gneiss formations that date back millions of years, drawing attention from both nature lovers and geology fans. Its elevation provides panoramic views of surrounding mountain ranges, alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, and dense forests alive with mule deer and marmots.

What makes New York Mountain unique in this region is its remote atmosphere coupled with moderately challenging hiking routes that reward visitors with quiet solitude and dramatic landscapes. The area’s historical significance adds character, as the land was once traveled by Ute tribes and later touched by mining activities in Colorado’s early days. A somewhat unusual chapter of its history involves an A-10 Thunderbolt crash in the late 1990s, marking the mountain as a notable location for aviation history buffs.

Visitors often praise the breathtaking summit views, the tranquility of the wilderness, and the opportunity to stay in nearby yurts, which enhance the rustic outdoor experience. The trailhead, while somewhat tricky to locate and requiring robust transportation, leads hikers on a route through evergreen forests, alpine meadows, and rocky outcrops. With less foot traffic than more popular Colorado peaks, New York Mountain offers a rewarding adventure without the crowds, making it a valued destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a touch of Colorado’s rich outdoors heritage.

Editorial Assessment

New York Mountain is a beautiful location with fantastic hiking opportunities and historical significance. However, it lacks the unique geological features or global recognition that would place it among the world's most iconic natural landmarks.

New York Mountain is the location of an A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) crash that happened in the late 1990s. Capt. Craig Button piloted his A-10 from Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson on a training mission, but shortly after his squadron took off, he split off from the group and headed north. Capt. Button flew into Northern Arizona, crossed the Navajo Indian Reservation and into Southern Colorado. He eventually flew his plane into New York Mountain, but no one ever knew why. The plane was loaded with live bombs, but they were never recovered and authorities said he never dropped them before the crash.

New York Mountain! Beautiful New York Mountain! Everybody's talking about it, and lot of people are talkin' like it's a complete and total disaster! Sad! It's a disgrace. People come out here...and they think they're gonna find New York. But they're NOT gonna find New York, cause New York is very low-energy. We don't need low energy in Colorado. We need high energy! But frankly, let me tell ya, of all the mountains in Colorado, this one is YUGE! Very, very HYUGE! And MASSIVE! More massive than Mount Massive! They don't make mountains like this anymore! But when we win, We Will Make the Mountains Great Again! Thank you, God bless you, good night!

Really difficult to find the trail head, would have given it 5 stars otherwise. We had a 4WD and it might be needed to get there. We stayed in the yurts the night before the hike which was really nice. There were other hikers but not …
