About This Adventure Destination

Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail, located on Santa Cruz Island just off the coast of Ventura, California, offers a memorable outdoor experience in the Channel Islands National Park. This moderately challenging 4.7-mile loop stands out in Southern California for its stunning combination of island wilderness, coastal views, and unique geological formations. The trail winds through a canyon filled with native shrubs and wildflowers, climbing to higher elevations that reveal dramatic overlooks of sheer cliffs and the vast Pacific Ocean.

Visitors on this trail encounter remarkable volcanic and sedimentary rock layers, tracing the island’s ancient geological past. Wildlife sightings are common, including seals bobbing off the shoreline, dolphins breaking the waves, and a variety of seabirds soaring overhead. The trail also passes through areas that were once inhabited by the Chumash people, adding a layer of cultural significance to the natural landscape. The Channel Islands were designated a national park in 1980 to protect their unique ecology and historical sites.

Hiking the Scorpion Canyon Loop offers a true coastal island experience away from the mainland crowds. The loop’s ups and downs challenge hikers with elevation gains approaching 500 feet, yet rewarding them with peaceful canyon scenes and expansive ocean vistas. Some sections are narrow and steep but manageably so with proper footwear and pacing. Its location within the park creates a sense of remoteness, while friendly trail users and well-marked paths ease navigation. Visitors will appreciate this trail’s blend of island wilderness, scenic lookout points, and a glimpse into the natural and cultural richness of the Channel Islands region.

Editorial Assessment

Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail provides beautiful views and diverse nature within a national park setting. While it offers moderate hiking and an engaging natural environment, it doesn’t possess the unique geological features that might elevate it to a higher iconic status.

I recommend you hike the smugglers rd last because it’s very steep uphill otherwise and you see more views at the end as a reward

It's a heavily visited, short trail. It's got reasonable vista points. Compared to other trails on this island the rating

The incline and descent can be pretty brutal. Especially if you're hiking with gear. If you're hiking between Scorpion and Prisoners Harbor/Del Norte, the path crosses the summit at 1800ft. But I highly recommend it for the adventurous.

The view is really beautiful on the mountain. The trail is not hard but sometimes it’s narrow.
