I have been working with the Matetsi team for nearly two years planning this stay, and without a doubt, they knocked it out of the park. We chose Matetsi for our wedding because we’ve stayed here on five previous occasions (including our engagement and two birthdays), and it remains our favourite lodge in all of Africa. We brought a number of guests for whom this was their first time in Africa and their first safari. The entire team made everyone feel welcome and tailored the experience to each guest with incredible precision. Our biggest priority was that, even with a large group, no one would feel like a number. We wanted every guest to feel like they were arriving as an individual in their own right, and the team executed this flawlessly. The room hardware is phenomenal, recently upgraded with new windows and doors that provide a better seal to minimise the chance of unwanted bugs or critters entering the suites (not entirely avoidable. You are in the bush, after all). Each suite is enormous over 1,000 sq ft, with a private plunge pool, outdoor shower, oversized circular bathtub indoors, and indoor rainfall shower. The beds are massive and extremely comfortable, and the in-room minibar is kept well stocked. The Family suite has a separate ensuite bedroom attached via enclosed corridor. The River house is great for family and entertaining with large pool and deck for bbq and drinks. Laundry is one of the standout features, especially for a wedding party. The laundry and housekeeping teams were incredible and quickly turned around pressings for all our guests. The food has elevated significantly since our last stay in October 2023. The new Executive Chef, Mxolisi, brings fine-dining elements to the casual bush experience, and it’s executed brilliantly. Drinks, including alcohol, are included, and they offer a lovely selection of Brut and Rosé MCC (South African sparkling wines). October is a fantastic time to visit, right at the end of the dry season, so minimal bugs and excellent game viewing. This trip had the best sightings of all our visits: lions every day (very rare), wild dogs (super rare), leopard (super rare), plus an array of hippo, elephant, buffalo—you name it. Truly incredible and diverse game viewing. This exceptional wildlife experience is a direct result of Matetsi’s significant investment in conservation, including major support for anti-poaching teams deployed across the concession. I’m pleased to say that more than half of our friends and family are already planning their return to Matetsi. Score: 99/100 (There’s always room for improvement—but perfection is pretty darn close with this property.)
