About This Adventure Destination

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area in Kure Beach, North Carolina, is a remarkable place where coastal beauty meets rich history. This destination stands out as one of the best spots in the region for both beach lovers and history buffs. Visitors experience wide sandy beaches stretching along the Atlantic Ocean, offering calm swimming spots and peaceful places to unwind. Just inland, salt marshes and maritime forests create a habitat for a variety of wildlife, making the area popular among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

One of the park’s highlights is the Basin Trail, an easy, flat path that leads walkers through diverse landscapes, including pine forests and salt marshes. Along the way, visitors encounter the remnants of a World War II bunker where Robert E. Harrell, known locally as the "Fort Fisher Hermit," lived for over a decade. The trail ends at a wooden observation deck with broad views over the Cape Fear River and surrounding coast.

Fort Fisher also carries important historical significance as the site of a Civil War fort that guarded the vital port of Wilmington. Visitors can learn about this history through the onsite museum and walking tours, which bring to life the stories from the 19th century battles.

The balance of natural beauty, wildlife habitats, and historical features makes Fort Fisher a compelling destination. Whether enjoying a day at the beach, taking a leisurely walk along the trails, or stepping back in time at the historic site, visitors appreciate its welcoming atmosphere and variety of experiences unique to the North Carolina coast.

Beautiful area, the only reason why I only gave it four stars is because there were so many people there.

We were visiting from Cary. Beach was great in itself. Pretty clean and water with no weeds (unlike the Miami beaches). But the surrounding infra doesn't support good time. No showers. The rinse of station is limited to two taps. The washrooms don't have any light in them. People tend to take water from the sink faucet and wash of their feet and rinse their clothes in the sink, which clogs it. It's a mess if you go during busy weekend (we went on Sunday of Labor Day weekend). Don't know if there are other good beaches around. Kure beach 3 miles up north is worse than this in amenities. It doesn't even have a changing room. Just restrooms.
