About This Adventure Destination

Fort Fisher 4x4 Beach offers a unique seaside experience along the shores of Pleasure Island, North Carolina. Unlike typical beaches, this location allows vehicles to drive directly on the sand, opening up a spacious and adventurous coastal playground stretching several miles. The beach’s natural environment features wide sandy expanses that blend gently into the Atlantic Ocean, with rolling waves and a backdrop of maritime forests and dunes. This area is especially notable for its accessibility by 4x4 vehicles, allowing visitors to traverse untouched coastal stretches and feel closely connected to the rugged natural surroundings.

The beach is adjacent to the historic Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, adding a cultural hint to your visit. The fort played a key role during the Civil War, and now the area balances history with outdoor fun. You might spot shorebirds and seasonal marine life, and the natural dune barriers help maintain the region's ecological integrity. This beach is special because of its blend of unrestricted vehicle activity and pristine coastal scenery, presenting a rare chance for outdoor enthusiasts to combine off-road driving with classic beach vibes.

Visitors often appreciate the quiet stretches where they can enjoy solitude, sun, and sea while having enough space to roam without crowds. Seasonal weather brings pleasant conditions suitable for sunbathing, fishing, and picnicking. The coastal breeze and scenic horizon create a memorable atmosphere for anyone seeking an active and casual beach experience on the Atlantic coast.

Editorial Assessment

Fort Fisher 4x4 Beach offers a distinctive outdoor experience due to its rare allowance of vehicle access on a natural beach, combined with beautiful coastal scenery and historical proximity. While it is beloved regionally for off-road driving and quiet beach stretches, it lacks the singular geological formations or global ecological significance required for a top-tier iconic natural landmark rating.

Fort Fisher State recreation area is amazing. They have a free beach area which is easily accessible for both capable and handicap people. They also have a four-wheel-drive option. It’s only $30 a day during the week and $40 a day on the weekend. But you can get an annual pass for $200 which you can go pretty much any day you want all year long. The day at the beach was amazing. It was nobody around and me and my mother and my girlfriend had a great time.

Really enjoyed Fort Fisher 4x4 Beach. It’s hard to beat being able to drive right out onto the beach and park your vehicle there for the day. We did some surf fishing and had a great time. The beach was nice and clean, and it was just a really relaxing place to hang out, fish, and enjoy the ocean. Definitely a place I’d come back to

What a beautiful beach! Stop at the pavilion just before the 4x4 beach to get a pass. $30 as of June 2026, $40 weekends, annual pass $200. Drive for as long or as short as you want, there are stretches with people and without. Deflate your tires to 15-20 psi so they float on the sand. Bring your own air pump as there are no facilities for that anywhere on the beach. No food trucks either, although we did get some Italian Ice from a vendor on the beach.
