We were staying in an Airbnb directly across the island on the ICW in early October and kayaked here. Very easy to kayak to and the island is only accessible by kayak, paddle board etc. Island is uninhabited-no bathrooms, stores or trash cans. We brought a picnic basket and drinks in a small ice chest. Atlantic Ocean beach access is very private and we had the ocean beach all to ourselves the entire day. Great place for private romantic getaway, overnight camping, seashell or driftwood collecting. Very beautiful, relaxing, secluded and I highly recommend. Island was well kept and clean. Make sure you pickup after yourselves and take your trash with you when leaving to keep this beautiful place clean especially since there are no trash cans. And be sure to time your adventure there by checking the low/high tide so you don’t get stuck in muddy marsh when low tide especially in the evening hours because it’s pitch black and you can’t be seen. Cell signal is decent and I highly recommend bringing your phone in a water protected sealed case. Dogs are allowed but again pickup after yourselves including your dogs. We loved it here as this was our first visit here and first visit to NC. A truly beautiful place. I also highly suggest visiting Figure Eight Island which is very different but very magical and a little piece of heaven. It’s about 20 minutes north of here by motor boat on the ICW, hang a right into Mason’s Inlet. That area is famous among boaters. The water can be shockingly clear because of the sandy bottom, and at low tide some spots become very skinny and shallow. It’s the kind of place where someone says, “Just follow me in,” and you’re glad you did because the channel isn’t always obvious. Water is gorgeous and clear once you get into the inlet and all around Figure Eight Island where you’ll have access to sand bars and different levels of water depth. Do your research before going and watch the tides again because it’s really easy to get trapped in the inlet during low tide. I love everything about the ICW, Masonboro Sound, the creeks, the barrier islands, marshes and wildlife and hidden boating spots.
