This trailhead provides access to a series of hiking paths that pass through dry hillsides, pockets of pine trees, and fields brightened up by seasonal wildflowers like the vibrant Bitterroot bloom. The trail routes lead either to Patterson Lake—a peaceful spot for reflection and wildlife spotting—or to the summit of Patterson Mountain, where hikers are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Unique to this area, the mix of open terrain and scattered forests lets visitors experience diverse natural features from rocky slopes to shaded sections. The sightlines stretch to the distant North Cascades, offering an impressive panorama that embodies the Pacific Northwest’s rugged beauty. Patterson Mountain Trailhead is also valued for its accessibility, situated near Highway 20, making it a popular yet relatively quiet alternative to busier national parks nearby.

Hiking here offers not only physical challenge but also peaceful engagement with the region’s ecology and geology—granite outcrops, seasonal wildflower displays, and the occasional appearance of wildlife add to the experience. The trail system’s clear markers and moderate elevation change make it suitable for hikers who want a rewarding outdoor adventure without the crowds. Whether visiting during spring for wildflowers or late summer for bright clear skies, Patterson Mountain Trailhead captures the essence of Washington’s wilderness and is a well-loved destination for nature enthusiasts.

Editorial Assessment

Patterson Mountain Trailhead offers rewarding hiking experiences with panoramic views and wildflower displays, making it a beloved spot for nature lovers in the North Cascades region. While it provides beautiful scenery and a taste of rugged mountain terrain accessible close to town, it is not unique on a global scale due to the availability of many similar mountain hikes in the Pacific Northwest. The natural features like the alpine lake and seasonal blooms are appealing but do not rank among the few top-tier globally exceptional landmarks. Its moderate difficulty and accessibility add to its appeal for a broad range of visitors.

This was an amazing trail near Winthrop with sweeping views of the Cascades. There is not a lot of tree coverage but we hiked it in March - a bit of snow on the trail and especially the North end but very manageable. Sunny on the way down. We went to the peak trail.

This place was awesome, I went during the winter and the lake was fully frozen over and there were people ice fishing and taking walks on the ice with their dogs.
