Watched my Golden Retriever chase a bird off the top of one of the flattops, hiked down to the Ranger's station where he said to use the Devils Causeway in an attempt to reach/scale the west face ice glaciers where I'd last seen my golden doing 360° circles until his back hyperextended around a Boulder! He failed to warn me the causeway was 3' wide, jagged and both sides dropped straight down 1-2,000 rocky feet. I was running on adrenaline and just wanted to grab Sir Beauingham Nicholas's collar & bury him, otherwise I'd never have crossed it nor would I cross it again! I spent the day walking along the base of the area I thought he'd fallen from, wearing my rugby shorts, yellow mesh Nike running shoes (no socks) and carrying my backpack. I stopped at dusk and made a campsite fire without finding him, spent the night crying and sleeping on the ground that had just taken my 1 1/2 yr old red golden from me then hiked out in the morning. I was 23 and looking forward to my 2nd season being 1 of 2 Americans playing basketball in Ireland. Beau had spent 6 months during my 1st yr with my parents and to this day, nearing 70, I believe God intervened to say my incredible golden would be better off in Doggie Heaven then spending 9 months wondering where his human was, would I be coming home that night? Add the little wind that kept pushing on my body and crawling on hands & knees over the Devils Causeway was one of the scariest times in my life!

Very natural feeling hike, went the long way around the ridge, and took the old Chinese wall trail. Need to be on a game when crossing as the ridge is it is very narrow.
