Hlawga Lake is recognized as a vital historic landmark in Yangon, serving a dual legacy as both an essential colonial-era utility and a major environmental sanctuary. The greater Hlawga Lake has supplied water to Yangon (then Rangoon) since 1904. It was developed as a solution to the growing city's chronic water shortages and the contamination of previous sources like Kandawgyi Lake. Between 1921 and 1924, an extension dam was built to create the Zokanabe Lake catchment area, which significantly reinforced the water supply capacity for the greater Hlawga reservoir. In 1955, the Ministry of Forestry proposed establishing a sanctuary around the lake as a symbol of the Sixth Buddhist Council (Chaṭṭha Saṅgāyana). The current Hlawga National Park was established between 1981 and 1982 with joint funding from the Burmese government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Its purpose shifted toward protecting the forests in the lake's catchment area and preserving indigenous wildlife. The park officially opened to the public on September 30, 1989. Today, Hlawga remains one of the four active reservoirs providing water to approximately two-thirds of Yangon's population. Historically a favorite retreat spot, it continues to serve as a vital link to Myanmar's natural heritage and traditional leisure practices.
