Chumbe Island Coral Park: A Marine Paradise

We were here for a day trip and I was a bit disappointed. First some positive things: + People are all friendly and helpful + The lunch was amazing. Great local food. + It is a pretty reef and you can technically see alot even though we had to stress through it due to the limited time + Beautiful atmosphere - I went to the full day trip to snorkel but from the full day only an hour was possible and that very structured. That might be better if you stay overnight but the day trip leaves at 16:30 and the day effectively the program was done at 15:40. - The program beside that snorkel trip was not dense either. Basically a 40 min forest walk, a lunch and the hour snorkling. Inbetween there was lots of waiting and you were also not allowed to go into the water yourself If you stay a night you might have a better experience but for such an expensive day trip I expected more

To be honest an eco paradise. Guys I really hope it stays like this for a very long time, despite what happens in the other Zanzibar islands.

Took a day trip to Chumbe Island. A private island, fully managed nature reserve and surrounded by a protected coral reef. Only 20 people can visit the island every day so you have to be lucky. The island itself used to be underwater and part of this reef and is now covered with various unique trees and plants. After an hour's drive to west Zanzibar, we took a small boat to the island. Once there, we received a short instruction from a very busy snorkeling instructor, after which we were put back on a boat to go snorkeling. Many beautiful tropical fish, coral species and small sharks have been spotted. After an hour everyone was back on shore and we had a 3-course lunch with a delicious mix of Zanzibar, Arabic, Indian and African dishes with fresh, local fish, vegetables and fruit. Proceeds from guest visits are used for free environmental educational programs for local schools and communities in Zanzibar. Then explored the island further: a nature walk through the mangrove forest and climbing the historic lighthouse.
