Overview:
Blue Clay Bike Park is Wilmington’s premier mountain biking destination, a compact but action-packed 100-acre park with trails designed for both newcomers and seasoned riders. The trails are carved from North Carolina clay, creating a surface that challenges even the best with its mix of root-knotted paths, downhill berms, and technical twists.

Trail Highlights:

  • Total Trail Distance: Approximately 5 miles
  • Skill Levels: Clearly marked paths for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders
  • Trail Terrain: Expect compact clay, sand, root-dense sections, and natural obstacles requiring quick reflexes

Key Features:

  • Downhill Berms: Blue Clay’s signature downhill run features banked berms perfect for high-speed cornering, giving riders a sensation like surfing through the forest.
  • Root-Filled Paths: The park’s trails are unapologetically raw, incorporating natural root clusters and small jumps. It’s essential to have tuned suspension and solid tires for these technical sections.
  • Brief Flats: Between the hills and curves, you’ll hit short flat stretches—perfect for catching your breath and refocusing.

Local Tips:

  • Nearby Refuel Spots: Wilmington’s downtown is just a short drive away. Grab a post-ride meal at Fork n Cork, known for its craft burgers, or stop by Good Hops Brewing to unwind with a local craft beer.

Getting There: From downtown Wilmington, take I-40 West, then merge onto N College Road toward Blue Clay Road. Follow signage to the park; parking is free and conveniently located by the trailhead.

Nice place for a quiet walk. Since mungo homes took over abbey nature, it’s my go to spot to get a few miles in surrounded by nature.

Coming from the Raleigh area, I was worried these trails would disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised! There's more elevation change here than expected and the trail builders have done a great job of taking advantage of what vertical curves they can. But they've also maximized the fun from horizontal curves. The trails curve and twist nonstop. Lots of fun and as much of a workout as I wanted to get by pushing my pace. The builders have obviously put a lot of work into these trails and continue to do so - I saw the mini-trackhoe parked in the woods. The Beginner route is about 1.8 miles as marked with green blazes, but there are a number of connectors you can use to shorten that if you want. The blue-blazed Intermediate route uses parts of the Beginner route but then goes on further. The advanced route across the paved road is marked with black arrow signs and offers the most elevation changes. Out of 9 miles of riding, there were only three or four intersections that confused me for a moment. I'll definitely be back!

It's a fun, free mtb trail. A cool layout, I really wish it had a more challenging features vs. going fast to make it harder. Good for all skill levels

Perfect for experienced bike riders. Definitely a challenging course. Do not expect to take it easy at this park. But, the sweat through your hat proves the good job done.

The park is perfect for those seeking to pump out some miles in a short time, it may lack the adrenaline rush sought by experienced riders. Despite this, Blue Clay Bike Park remains a fantastic destination for a heart-pumping ride, earning it a solid four-star rating.
