Sugar Mountain: The High Country’s Ultimate Downhill Biking Escape

Sugar Mountain Resort isn’t just for winter warriors. When the snow melts, it transforms into a mountain biking haven, with a network of expertly designed trails that take full advantage of its rugged terrain and sweeping views. From early June to October, the Summit Express chairlift does the heavy lifting, whisking riders and sightseers up 1,200 vertical feet to the 5,300-foot peak. But for bikers, that’s where the hard work begins—and the real fun starts.

The bike park caters to all skill levels with its thoughtfully constructed trails. Beginner riders can ease into the action on "Easy Street" and "Carolina Cruiser," where smooth descents and flowing lines make the perfect intro to gravity-fed biking. Intermediate thrill-seekers will love trails like "Rally Alley," which mix speed and small features like rollers and berms. For experts, Sugar Mountain offers gnarly challenges like "Down South" and "Gnarnia," with steep descents, rock gardens, and tight switchbacks demanding both skill and nerve.

Never ridden Sugar before? Take advantage of guided tours to learn the lay of the land or schedule a lesson to fine-tune your body positioning, cornering, and braking technique. The trails are as demanding on your bike as they are on your body, so come prepared with protective gear. Full-face helmets are a must for advanced runs, and rentals are available for bikes and gear if you need them.

When you’re ready to wrap up your day, the lodge awaits at the base with food, drinks, and a place to wash the mud off your bike. Or, if you’re sightseeing, you can walk the short trail at the summit to reach the rock outcroppings, where panoramic views of Pisgah National Forest will take your breath away.

Sugar Mountain isn’t just a ride—it’s an adventure fueled by adrenaline, natural beauty, and the satisfaction of conquering the mountain one turn at a time.

This is a really lame mountain that is very poorly run. You gotta love that they jack the rates at Christmas. Which you would think the higher rates would mean groups of people not sitting in the middle of the trails, walking areas and steps covered in sheets of ice, grammar school lunch concessions, etc. I would not recommend this place.

Today was my first visit and I checked the snow conditions. It is not 100% good yet. If you come in December, you can experience great skiing and snowboarding.

Arrived at 11. Price for passes and ski rental wasnt too bad, snow was alright, more than 80% of the snow is blown so not too much powder and some icy spots. My only complaint would be the pricing on the dining area. Sub par food, i got two corn dogs and fries, my dad got a chicken salad sandwich and soup for a total of $50 ($48.67). One corn dog is $7. Pretty crazy ballpark like prices so if you’re a hungry person, make sure to pack a lunch unless you dont mind expensive cafeteria foods. Scenery was nice and cold.

Such a beautiful Ski Resort! My family and I spent the day snow tubing and ice skating! The staff was friendly, and the resort itself was very nice and well-maintained.

Sugar is a fantastic ski mtn in the Appalachian mountains. Gunther always makes sure that the snow depth and quality is premier. Almost all new detachable ski lifts makes getting to the top of the mtn easy and quick. Sugar also has the most challenging terrain anywhere in NC. If you don’t enjoy skiing here that is okay, there are other places that may suite your style better. Keep up the good work Sugar 🤙🏽⛷️ Cheers
