Fly Fishing on Lake Placid: A Serene Adirondack Escape

Fly fishing on Lake Placid offers anglers a chance to experience the serenity and beauty of the Adirondack wilderness while pursuing some of the region’s most sought-after fish. Known for its pristine waters and surrounding mountain vistas, Lake Placid is a prime destination for fly fishers seeking both a rewarding catch and a peaceful retreat.

The Waters

Lake Placid is renowned for its clear, cold waters, which provide an ideal habitat for species such as brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and landlocked salmon. The lake is fed by cool mountain streams, creating conditions that are perfect for fly fishing, particularly during spring and fall when fish are most active near the surface.

Anglers often find success along the lake’s many inlets and outlets, as well as near rocky shoals and drop-offs. The Chubb River, which flows into Lake Placid, is another favorite spot for fly fishing, offering quieter waters with excellent opportunities to catch native trout.

Why Fish Here?

Lake Placid combines world-class fishing with stunning scenery. The surrounding High Peaks create a dramatic backdrop as you cast your line, while the calm waters and gentle breezes add to the meditative quality of fly fishing. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner, Lake Placid provides a setting that feels both remote and accessible, with plenty of spots to find your perfect cast.

What to Know

  • Best Times to Fish: Spring (May to June) and fall (September to October) are peak seasons, as cooler temperatures bring fish closer to the surface. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly productive.
  • Fishing License: A New York State fishing license is required. Licenses can be purchased online or at local shops in Lake Placid.
  • Gear to Bring: Lightweight fly rods (4-6 weight) are recommended. Stock up on dry flies, streamers, and nymphs that mimic local insect hatches.

Insider Tips

  • Guided Trips: Local outfitters and guides can help you navigate the lake, recommend flies, and teach techniques for targeting specific species. This is especially helpful for newcomers to the area.
  • Dress Smart: Wear layers and bring waterproof waders, as conditions can change quickly. Polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting fish and reducing glare.
  • Respect the Environment: Practice catch-and-release to preserve the lake’s delicate ecosystem and ensure sustainable fishing for future generations.

Nearby Activities

  • After a morning of fishing, explore Lake Placid Village for dining, shopping, or a refreshing drink at a local brewery.
  • Combine your fishing trip with a hike on nearby trails, such as Cobble Hill or Mount Jo, for a full Adirondack day.

Fly fishing on Lake Placid isn’t just about the catch—it’s about immersing yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Adirondacks. With its clear waters, abundant fish, and awe-inspiring surroundings, this destination offers an experience that’s as rewarding for the soul as it is for the angler.

Rich is the best. 2nd year fishing with him. Patient, passionate, ethical and decades of experience. This is fly fishing at its very best.

Rich is the standard against which all fly guides should be measured. I had a great full day guided trip with him this spring, pulling in over 30 trout! His knowledge both of the rivers he guides and on the art of fly fishing itself is second to none. I’ve seen the benefits of my day with Rich in my fishing performance all season long. Will definitely be back to touch up on my skills and just hang out with him on the water.

I don't even know how to begin writing a review for how truly outstanding Richard Garfield is as a Fishing Guide, friend, and person. At this point in my life I have been able to fish with Rich numerous times and every time I learn an array of new skills and analysis techniques. I have also been fortunate enough to fish with multiple other guides during my life and while I have met some amazing guides; none compete with Richard. I confidently and personally believe that Rich is the best fly angler in the Adirondacks and he combines his skills and knowledge beautifully with his ability to teach. I took my first trip with Richard back in 2014 with my cousin as fly fishing was starting to grow in our lives. That one trip single handedly propelled fly fishing into my greatest passion in life. It was all of the little things that really stuck out and stuck with me since that first trip (ex. don't step on the green). Every trip since had a specific goal in mind (streamers, dry fly, pocket water, etc) to help grow myself as an angler and I do not know where I would be today without those trips. Rich is someone I now stay in touch with and consider a friend; that is how much our connection and respect for each other has grown through fly fishing and it all begin with one trip in 2014. If you are in the Adirondacks and looking for a guide book with Richard Garfield! Attached are some amazing photos from the past years!

Shakespeare lost sleep wishing he could write like Rick Garfield reads water. Monet once said “ I dream of painting like Rich Garfield fly fishes”. Jimi Hendrix practiced until his fingers were bleeding in hopes of playing guitar like Rich Garfield casts a fly. Rich Garfield once counted to infinity, two times…no wait, that was Chuck Norris..sorry, but you get my point. Seriously, I consider it a rare privilege to spend time with and learn from a man that has reached the pinnacle of his trade through passion, curiosity, and perseverance. When Rich takes a break from being the top fly fishing guide in the Adirondacks … he goes fly fishing. What does that tell you ? I’ve known and have fished with Rich for over 15 years and consider him a good friend. As a college graduation gift, I recently brought my nephew on a trip with Rich which is now the basis of lifelong memories. Fishing was lights out. Rich put us on monster Trout for two days for just an epic trip! I cannot recommend highly enough. I cannot fathom how any guide could be all around better for in any way!! Thank you Mr. Garfield !!
