Lived in SoCal on and off about 20 years and figured I had to finally make this hike and get my picture!
I parked on the road there was a couple other cars but plenty of room.
For the most part it's paved or hard pack access road to the top. But it's a very constant incline that's actually a pretty good incline if you don't stop you'll stay up get winded.
It was about 70 the day I went and was perfect but there is a sign that says don't bring dogs on hot days. There's very little shade and the concrete would get hot.
Potato Chip Rock was actually pretty cool and feels sketchy but stable. Little climb to get onto the rock.
The views around are amazing too!
I highly recommend checking it out but stay hydrated!

Mt. Woodson Trail is my favorite hiking spot in San Diego. Whenever I visit my daughters, I always take my dog, Shadow, on this trail. It's an 8-mile hike that's a bit open, so I recommend hiking in the early morning during the summer. Parking near the lake costs $10. The trail is dog-friendly and well-maintained. At the summit, you'll find Potato Chip Rock, a perfect spot for taking photos.

We arrived at Lake Poway at 7:30 am plenty of parking but a 10$ fee is charged at the entrance if you're NOT a Poway resident. We got to the Peak/ Rock around 9:15. Expect a line if you're trying to take a picture at the Rock. Made it back to the lake around 11:10 am.

Beautiful hike, and great place to watch the sunrise!
I took the trail that begins off of highway 67, which is shorter (about 4mi total, going out and back) and pretty much fully paved. The actual Potato Chip rock is western facing, however the view climbing up the mountain and at the top is gorgeous during sunrise! There are plenty of spots to stop for pictures and breaks as you make your way up. The trail is pretty steep so be sure to bring water especially if going during the day because of the lack of tree coverage.
Even though I arrived around 5:30a, people were already out and about on the trail, so if you want a picture on the rock, aim going earlier to avoid a long line.
No bathrooms, dog friendly, and saw people of all ages so this should be suitable for pretty much anyone!

Definitely recommend this hike.
You are rewarded with breathtaking views of Vegetation and Lake views along the way.
And at the top you will be rewarded with the awesome experience of climbing out to the Potato Chip Rock Diving board. There have always been wonderful people you will meet in the line to get out to the Diving Board that you can share taking each other’s pictures of your experience.
Please bring at least two liters of water.
And enjoy your hike
