Hiking the Florida Trail through Juniper Prairie Wilderness

The Florida National Scenic Trail is a bucket-list destination for outdoor enthusiasts, and the section passing through the Ocala National Forest is an unforgettable experience. Located about 90 minutes from Palm Coast, the Ocala stretch offers a unique opportunity to traverse one of the most biologically diverse and historic areas in Florida. This hike is perfect for those seeking to experience the state’s natural beauty, from ancient sand pine scrub habitats to pristine forested wetlands.

Adventure Guide to Hiking the Florida Trail through Ocala

  • Juniper Prairie Wilderness Segment

    • The Juniper Prairie Wilderness, part of the Ocala National Forest, includes a scenic 13-mile stretch of the Florida Trail. What distinguishes this section is its sand pine scrub ecosystem, which is rare even within Florida. Hikers can expect stunning views of longleaf pines, diverse wildflowers, and open prairies. This area is home to wildlife like the Florida black bear and gopher tortoise.
    • The terrain is sandy, requiring sturdy hiking boots, and there are no paved roads nearby, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Hidden Pond

    • One of the highlights of the trail, Hidden Pond, is a spring-fed pool located approximately halfway into the Juniper Prairie section. Known for its refreshingly cool water, it’s an ideal spot for a mid-hike rest or swim. The turquoise water set against the backdrop of oak hammocks and palmettos make it a photographer’s dream.
    • Plan to arrive early to claim this serene spot before fellow hikers pass through.
  • The Yearling Trail Junction

    • Connecting to the Yearling Trail, this area is rich in history. The trail takes its name from the novel The Yearling, inspired by the local landscape and culture. You’ll find remnants of pioneer homesteads and markers detailing the lives of early settlers who struggled to tame this wild terrain.

Visitor Tips

  • Best times to visit: October through March for cooler weather and fewer insects.
  • What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water (no reliable sources on many stretches), bug spray, and sturdy footwear.
  • Getting there: From Palm Coast, take I-95 to US-17 south to SR-40 west. Travel time is approximately 1.5 hours.

This portion of the trail offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and history, making it a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts.

If you want to see what natural, untouched Florida is like, this is the place to come. It is very remote and a great spot for backpacking to camp at Hidden Pond. If you hike, it's a great day trip from Juniper Springs to Hidden Pond and back (11mi round trip). Make sure you leave early enough to get back before the sun goes down. Black bears are active close to the campground especially in the fall.

Our very own Wilderness in Central Florida is in our beautiful Ocala National Forest. No hunting here. The deer and bears roam freely and so can we humans. Listen for the sound of Sandhill Cranes in the morning and owl calls aplenty while camping in the cool seasons. The star veiwing is about the best you can get in Central Florida. There is always something to enjoy on this Prairie.

Nice walk to hidden pond today. Easy flat hike from the campground around 6 miles each way. Finished with a dip in the spring to cool off perfect. Plenty of parking and the $11 entry pp was worth every cent.

We camped about 20 minutes from Hidden Pond in December. It was really nice being able to swim and refill drinking water. It got pretty chilly hammocking at 40 degrees, but at least there were no mosquitoes! This is my favorite place to camp so far, and we're coming back in a few months.
