THE JOURNEY

What the day feels like

What the three days feel like

You depart Christchurch and head north along the Kaikōura coastline and through the Wairau Valley into increasingly remote countryside before arriving at St Arnaud by Lake Rotoiti for the first night; depending on conditions there may be an opportunity for astrophotography overnight and a sunrise over the lake. The second day works west to Lake Rotoroa, on to Murchison for lunch, then south past O’Sullivans Bridge and SH 65 to Maruia Falls and the Maruia Hot Springs, where sauna and bathing are included (private baths cost extra). On day three a leisurely start takes you over the Lewis Pass, into the Waipara Valley with possible vineyard stops, and back to Christchurch by late afternoon with final stops at a beach and the Waimakariri Riverbank Park.
