THE GUIDES

Kaitiaki-led waka journeys

Local Kaitiaki lead the trip in traditional six‑person waka, combining river navigation with Māori cultural storytelling and practices that connect paddlers to the place and its history.

THE LANDSCAPE

Quiet river, native bush and canyon walls

Paddling delivers long stretches of tranquil water flanked by lush native bush and steep canyons—scenery that defines the Whanganui River experience and punctuates days of steady, deliberate travel.

THE COMMUNAL ROUTE

Campsites, shared meals and marae welcome

Evenings are spent at established river campsites and culminate in a cultural welcome at Tieke Kainga Marae; the itinerary emphasizes communal cooking, camping and connection with both guides and fellow paddlers.

What the day feels like
