Clearwater’s Sailing Classroom places students in grades 4 and up aboard the tall ship Clearwater for an inquiry-driven program that pairs seamanship—raising the mainsail and navigating the river—with hands-on science stations and lessons in indigenous and regional history.

The program unfolds as a compact, active field trip: after check-in and a safety briefing with life-vest fitting, students board the sloop Clearwater, help raise the mainsail, cycle through hands-on learning stations (water testing, Hudson River life, indigenous history), participate in a fishing activity and navigational experiences, then return to the dock for a wrap-up discussion.

The program runs in two regular time slots—9:30 AM to 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM—and lasts approximately 2.5 hours; alternative scheduling may be available upon inquiry.
Dock location is specified in your booking calendar—check your reservation for the exact address and arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled sailing time.
Bring reusable water bottles, sunscreen, layered comfortable clothing and boat-appropriate shoes, a hat and sunglasses, light personal snacks, and a notebook and pencil for observations and reflections.
A crew-led safety briefing is part of the itinerary, and life vests are available upon request; teachers and chaperones should plan to supervise students throughout the outing.
