CANIÇO GUIDED TOUR FIELD GUIDE
Leap, Float, Repeat: Coasteering the Cliffs of Caniço
A 2-hour, adult-only (18+) guided coasteering tour that pairs progressive cliff jumps (up to ~20 m) with snorkeling in a protected underwater reserve — this guide explains what to expect, what to pack, and the safety essentials.
Leap, Float, Repeat: Coasteering the Cliffs of Caniço.
On the volcanic coast at Caniço you move between rock and sea with a certified local guide, gradually working through a series of cliff jumps and climbing sections until you choose the height that suits you. The highest jumping point changes with the tide and swell, varying between about 19 and 20 meters, and the route finishes with snorkeling in a nearby underwater nature reserve where Atlantic and Gulf Stream–fed tropical species—trumpetfish, parrotfish, pufferfish and, with luck, turtles—share the water. The operator supplies safety equipment, insurance, photos and a professional shuttle service, and tours are tailored to daily conditions with visitor comfort and safety as priorities.
Highlights
Outing Highlights
Progressive cliff jumps up to 20 meters
The itinerary is deliberately progressive: you start with moderate, relaxed leaps and after a few climbing sessions you choose whether to step up to greater heights—the highest point shifts with ebb and flow and sits around 19–20 m—so you can test the free-fall at your own comfort level.
Snorkel a vibrant protected reserve
After the jumps the route moves into a designated underwater nature reserve. Because of Madeira’s proximity to the Gulf Stream you can expect a mix of Atlantic and tropical species—trumpetfish, parrotfish, pufferfish—and the occasional turtle, all seen while snorkeling under guided supervision.
Guided, insured and supported from shore
The operator provides a certified local guide, all safety equipment, insurance, professional shuttle service and photos; the tour includes entrance to the Lido area where bar, restaurant, WC and changing rooms are available on site.
What the day feels like
What the outing feels like
The two-hour experience is kinetic: a series of short, coached approaches to cliff edges and ledges, measured climbs and progressive jumps that let you build confidence before attempting larger drops. Each jump delivers a brief, clean free-fall before the splash; later you slip on mask and snorkel to drift among reefs and reef fish under the watchful eye of your guide. Throughout, guides tailor the experience to the day’s conditions and to each participant’s comfort level.
