Outing Highlights

THE PEOPLE

Learn from a Naxi Family

The class is taught by a local ethnic Naxi family who share recipes and ingredient knowledge passed down locally—an intimate way to connect food to culture and everyday life in Lijiang.

THE ROUTE

Market Shopping Like a Local

Visit Lijiang’s oldest market to discover seasonal ingredients—from wild herbs to local snacks—and to sample small tastes and regional moonshine while learning how items are used in traditional Yunnan cookery.

THE FOOD

Recipes Rooted in Trade and Altitude

Experience dishes that reflect Yunnan’s trade links and high-altitude innovations—preparing a cold herbal starter, clay-pot rice noodles flavored with fermented soybean paste, and a regional palooda-style dessert.

What the day feels like

How the Morning Feels

The program begins with a slow, vendor-by-vendor walk through a busy local market to pick the day’s ingredients, then shifts to a hands-on cooking class in the host’s home studio where each guest prepares and eats three full dishes and finishes with snacks in a sunny courtyard.

Frequently asked questions

Planning Your Outing

What if I have special dietary requests?

Communicate any dietary requests at the time of booking so the operator can prepare appropriate alternatives; because you cook your own dishes some ingredients can be omitted, but severe allergies are not recommended due to possible cross-contamination.

How much food and drink will I get?

You’ll sample a few market snacks, then make and eat three full dishes yourself; after lunch additional snacks and drinks are offered and portions can be adjusted since you prepare the food.

Will I need to walk very far?

You’ll be on your feet for about one hour during the market visit at a slow pace with many standing stops, and around another hour standing at cooking stations—seated breaks are available in the studio.

What happens if it rains or the weather is extreme?

Tours operate rain-or-shine so dress accordingly; in rare extreme weather the guide will cancel and provide a full refund. During extreme air pollution (AQI over 400) tours will run but refunds are available if you cannot join for health reasons.

Should I book more than one Lost Plate tour?

Many guests do multiple Lost Plate tours; each tour focuses on the local cuisine of its city and offers unique dishes and stories—book more than one for a 10% discount when applicable.
