Over an immersive afternoon and early evening you move from the engine yard and museum into a passenger service, visit a recently reinstated signal box, then climb onto the footplate to take turns actually firing and driving a steam locomotive under the guidance of the Dean Forest Railway team.

What it feels like to stand on the footplate
The course unfolds like a staged progression from observation to operation: workshop and yard tours establish the context, a coordinator gives a safety briefing aboard the last passenger round trip, you practise signalling at Parkend, then return to Norchard to climb onto the footplate. Over the course of the approximately five‑hour session you alternate driving and firing across a full round trip and finish by helping the crew to bring the engine back into the yard and dispose of the fire.
