The Miner's Tour with Adventure Mining Company takes you deep into a historic Greenland, Michigan mine: begin in the No. 1 adit to see solid native copper and the largest rooms, then descend by rope to lower levels where narrow passages and some of the mine’s oldest workings await. The tour combines technical descent, tight crawling sections and a dramatic exit option — a swing bridge spanning a stope or a traditional 10-foot slide — all packed into a concentrated three-hour outing.

Outing Highlights

THE HISTORY

Native Copper & Giant Rooms

The tour follows the Prospectors route through the No. 1 adit, exposing solid pieces of native copper and the largest chambers in the mine — evidence of the site’s industrial past and the scale of the underground workings.

THE DESCENT

An 80-Foot Rappel to Lower Levels

Participants use a rappelling harness and gear to descend 80 feet to a lower level, then crawl through several small areas and hike among some of the mine’s oldest and most interesting passages.

THE EXIT

Swing Bridge or 10-Foot Slide

To finish the route you choose your thrill: cross a daring swing bridge that spans a 30-foot chasm between levels while clipped to an overhead safety line, or take the traditional 10-foot slide to reunite with the rest of the group.

What the day feels like

What the Descent Feels Like

The Miner's Tour compresses technical exposure and subterranean exploration into three hours: an aboveground approach into the No. 1 adit gives way to expansive rooms, then a controlled rappel drops you into darker, narrower corridors where crawling and careful footwork replace open passage. The final choice between a swaying bridge and a rapid slide adds a cinematic finish to an otherwise hands-on, grounded underground experience.

Suitability

Who it's for

Who this tour suits — and who should sit it out.

1
Active Teens & AdultsWell suited: participants ages 12 and up who are in good physical health and comfortable with uneven, steep terrain will get the most from the rappelling and underground crawling sections.
2
Adventure SeekersA strong match: anyone seeking hands-on thrills (an 80-foot rappel, tight crawls and a choice of swing bridge or slide) will find this concentrated underground experience rewarding.
3
Families with Older ChildrenConditional fit: families with children aged 12 or older may participate, provided those children are physically capable and comfortable with confined spaces and rappelling.
4
Less-Mobile or Very Young TravelersNot recommended: the tour is not ideal for those unable to handle uneven, steep terrain or tight crawling sections, and it excludes younger children under the operator’s minimum age.
