Five Days of Upper James Wilderness: Glen Wilton to Snowden by Paddle
A 5-day, 4-night, 63-mile expedition on the Upper James River Water Trail that pairs sustained whitewater and wilderness campsites with resupply options in Buchanan and Glasgow.
Five Days of Upper James Wilderness: Glen Wilton to Snowden by Paddle.
This is Twin Rivers Outfitters’ longest run of the Upper James: a 63-mile, multi-day wilderness descent where sustained Class I–II+ water, occasional big rapids and the James River Gorge converge with remote campsites, fishing holes and mountain views. The route asks for prior paddling experience and group discipline, and it rewards teams with long river miles, cool swim spots and the final white-water run through the Balcony Falls section.
Highlights
Outing Highlights
Long miles, varied whitewater
The trip covers the full Upper James Water Trail—63 miles of river that mix steady paddling with notable rapids and culminate in the James River Gorge's Balcony Falls. It’s a sustained run that gives paddlers a mix of technical sections and calmer stretches for recovery.
Remote camps, mountain views and swim spots
Expect serene river camps on private land, framed by the surrounding mountains; frequent swim stops and productive fishing holes break up the long days on the water and anchor the trip’s wilderness character.
Designed for seasoned groups
Because of remoteness and the difficulty of some rapids, Twin Rivers requires prior Class I–II+ experience, a minimum group size for safety, and pre-trip screening—this is an expedition for prepared, cohesive paddling parties.
