Volunteer trip leader and bird enthusiast David Bennett leads participants through on-land instruction on kayak equipment, strokes and safety before slipping into the water to scan the lake’s shoreline for Great Blue Heron, Wood Duck, Kingfisher, Osprey and other species—perhaps even a Bald Eagle.

The flow is deliberate and easy: arrive at the boathouse for a ground briefing, don PFD and shoes you don’t mind getting wet, then launch for a calm, 1.5–2 mile paddle that emphasizes slow scanning of the shoreline rather than speed. Expect a relaxed pace that accommodates novices while rewarding those who can hold still long enough to watch a kingfisher dive or a heron stalk the shallows.

Wear quick-drying clothes and comfortable shoes that can get wet; kayaking is a ‘get wet’ sport and occasional splashes are expected. The standard ticket includes kayak rental, paddle and PFD, but you may bring your own non-motorized kayak subject to a staff inspection.
If bringing your own kayak, it must be seaworthy; staff will inspect personal boats and provide a rental if a boat is deemed unsuitable for the class.

No prior birding experience is required; prior kayaking experience is not necessary but can be helpful because kayaking may be more challenging for first-timers.
